For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.’ Romans 8:14
“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.” (Luke 4:1. The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ at His baptism, and Jesus was obedient to being led into the wilderness, fasting for 40 days and being tempted by the devil. Millions of Christians, all over the world will be celebrate Lent, perhaps you are one of them. This special period in the Church calendar, the approach to the joy of Easter, is a significant opportunity to focus on how we can follow in Jesus’ footsteps, being, “imitators of God, as beloved children,” as St Paul puts it in his letter to the Ephesians (Ephesians 5:1.
The Lenten period of 40 days serves to remind us of this time of sacrifice and obedience that Jesus undertook, on our behalf. He did not give in to the temptations that were presented to Him, evidencing Himself as the perfect Son of God, the Lamb of God, who can take away our sins. Yet, while Lent is a man-made season, useful as a reminder to focus on the example of servant-hearted sacrifice that Jesus gave us, we have the opportunity to be obedient to God every day.
What’s more, we have the Holy Spirit to help us, to lead us into the life that Jesus’ good news promises us! “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26 God has also given us His Word to guide us and bring us into the fullness of life, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” (John 6: 63.
